Yes, you ARE biased: Unconscious (Gender) Bias in the Workplace

Event details

When you hear the word ‘manager,’ what image comes to mind?

Is it a young woman of colour, or a middle-aged white man?

Probably the latter. Think manager, think (white) male. This isn’t unusual; everyone has these ‘preprogramd’ ideas and unconscious biases based on appearance or demographic features.

Yes, everyone. So, yes, you too (even if you think otherwise).

Biologically, us humans seek safety. We tend to avoid change because the familiar is trusted and safe (status quo bias). Negativity poses a threat (negativity bias), and we unconsciously pay more attention to it – we must be alert to danger. Additionally, we have a strong need to belong, and that sense develops more quickly with those who are similar to us (affinity bias).

So, being biased is not your fault, but it is your responsibility to do something about it. The negative impact of unconscious bias is significant, both in our personal lives and in the workplace. If we only collaborate with people who are like us, we perpetuate inequality and hinder innovation. Bias can also result in unjust treatment or assessment of other people, purely based on, for example, gender. A man is considered assertive, while a woman displaying the same behaviour is labelled as bitchy. Conversely, a woman is considered nurturing, but a nurturing man is labelled as a softy.

What is included:

In the workshop “Yes, you ARE biased,” you will explore your own unconscious bias. Thanks to the workshop you will:

Understand

Better understand how your brain unconsciously works and where unconscious bias originates.

Gain insight

Gain insight into the six biases hindering diversity: affinity bias, status quo bias, negativity bias, Dunning-Kruger bias, false consensus bias, and confirmation bias.

Experience

Experience the (negative) effect of behaviour stemming from unconscious bias, both in yourself and others.

Receive

Receive actionable perspectives on recognising and reducing your own biases.

Feel

Feel how awareness of unconscious bias empowers you to act differently.

Be capable

Be capable of creating a more inclusive work environment that stimulates collaboration, and creativity in diverse teams.

This Doors Open workshop is developed based on embodied learning. Research shows that if you truly want to change behaviour, you must feel that change in your body. Simply knowing that you need to change and how to do so is not enough. Our approach integrates insights from neuroscience, biology, psychology, and martial arts, including aikido. In addition to practical and theoretical tools provided during the workshop, you will actively engage in somatic exercises. This way you will experience:

  • Learn how to center yourself: a crucial somatic exercise that calms your nervous system. This makes you aware of your biases and creating the possibility to pause when you need to decide how to act or respond.
  • Experience what it’s like to literally change perspectives, why it’s important, and how challenging it can be.
  • Identify your own prejudices and understand how they influence you and those around you.
  • Discover actions you can take to create movement and space, breaking free from a status quo or conflict.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for anyone aiming to address their unconscious biases. It is for professionals at all levels, from employees to managers, and for those who want to contribute to stimulating diversity, equality, and inclusion in their workplace.
